Norfloxacin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It is not used for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu).
Norfloxacin belongs to the group of antibiotics called quinolones and is used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes, ears, prostate, urinary tract, and gonorrhea (sexually transmitted diseases). In addition, norfloxacin is used to treat travelers' diarrhea. Bacterial infections are caused by the multiplication of harmful bacteria in or on the body. Infectious or harmful bacteria can make you sick and multiply rapidly in your body. These harmful bacteria produce chemicals called toxins that can damage tissues and make you sick. Norfloxacin is not effective for infections caused by viruses, including colds and flu.
Norfloxacin contains norfloxacin, which has a fast bactericidal effect and inhibits the synthesis of bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). An enzyme called DNA cyclooxygenase plays a key role in this process. On the other hand, norfloxacin has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic bacteria.
In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects, such as abdominal cramps, nausea, headache and dizziness. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will go away over time. However, if you continue to experience these side effects, it is recommended that you consult your doctor.
Before starting norfloxacin, tell your doctor if you have any allergies (to any antibiotic), kidney or liver problems. Do not self-administer norfloxacin, as self-administration may lead to antibiotic resistance, where the antibiotic fails to fight a specific bacterial infection.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking norfloxacin because it can cause increased dizziness. Norfloxacin may cause dizziness and vision problems, so be careful when driving.
Read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking norfloxacin and each time you refill your medication. If you have any questions, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day (every 12 hours) with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). Do not eat any food or dairy products (e.g., milk/yogurt) 2 hours before or 1 hour after taking norfloxacin. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, drink plenty of water while taking this medicine. The dose and length of treatment depends on your health condition and response to treatment.
Take this medication at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking other products that may make it less effective. Examples include quinapril, aluminum thioglycollate, vitamins/minerals (including iron and zinc), and products containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium (such as antacids, desoxynivalenol solutions, calcium-rich juices). Ask your pharmacist about all products you take.
Avoid taking large amounts of caffeine (e.g., coffee, energy drinks) as this medication may increase and/or make the effects of caffeine last longer.
Continue taking this medication even if your symptoms disappear after a few days until you have completed the full prescribed amount. Stopping the medication too soon may cause the infection to return. If your condition persists or worsens, tell your doctor.
